Schooling and education are TOTALLY different.

Listen, well-intentioned parents, I hear you. I am a mom. I have two kids. My kids' future and happiness matter more than anything else to me. I did my research and saved every penny that I could so that I can send my kids to the best private school possible. I read pretty much all the books out there about parenting and I participated in numerous educational activities and events that were perceived to be beneficial to my kids' future. On top of that, I am well educated. I have a MA from Syracuse University and a Ph.D. from the University of Maryland. And I taught in the classroom for 15+ years and spent almost two decades in higher education... 

BUT STILL... 

My kids seemed to be bored and showed little interest in learning. In fact, my husband and I struggled a great deal to get them up in the morning at 8am to get to school... It's an ordeal to go to school to say the least.

After a few years in school, my happy, playful, imaginative, inquisitive kids were gone... 

Something was wrong. Something was not working. Something was missing...

"Was it my kid?", I asked myself

I searched and became a student again. I also left my prestigious Associate Professor position to try to figure out what it takes to raise successful kids who are motivated, confident, and are equipped with real life skills. I invested thousands of dollars in classes, programs, conferences, and coaches. 

My own research and professional experience as an education consultant revealed a big secret to me. 

Are you ready to hear my big secret? 

That is, Our kids are NOT the problem; the problem is the way they are being taught, aka, the CENTURY-OLD EDUCATION MODEL

Hear me out on five specific reasons. 

Reason One: Grade Point Average is actually INVERSELY related to Innovation Orientation

Grade Point Average (GPA) is actually inversely related to innovation orientation. In other words, the higher the grade, the less likely your kid is to innovate. This is because the traditional educational and evaluation system trains and conditions your kids to be obedient and become factory workers. Yet, in today's information and digital economy, innovation is an important element to become job- and future-ready.

Reason Two: Creativity decreases as kids become more educated

The most watched TED talk is by Sir Ken Robinson, Do schools kill creativity. It has gained 68 Million+ views. Mr. Robinson made a compelling argument of why schools tend to kill children's creativity. The famous paperclip study by NASA also demonstrated this. The young kids in the study ( 4 and 5 years old) scored 98% in terms of creativity and divergent thinking (creative ways to use paperclips). But as they grow older, their creativity level dropped to 50% and eventually to 2%. What happened is that these kids became more educated. The same thing is happening to your kid right now as they sit in their classes, filling out bubble sheets and multiple choices. 

Reason Three: Kids attending high-achieving schools are now "at-risk" groups ( more mental health & substance abuse issues)

Most parents have the perception that if they send their kids to the best private school, everything will be taken care of. Their kids will be going to an Ivy League school and have a successful career and happy life. And they have done a good job as a parent. WRONG. More and more studies are showing that children who are attending high-achieving schools are having a lot more mental health and substance abuse issues than kids who don't. A big national study of almost 22,000 high school kids in the US suggested that almost 75% of students feel negative about their schools, with three dominant emotions including stressed (79.83%), bored (69.51%), and tired (58%). These numbers accurately reflect how your kids are feeling about their schooling right now. In fact, during my 20+ years of experience as an educator and life coach, I have NEVER met one single student who LOVES school. 

Reason Four: Soft skills carry MROE weight than test scores when it comes to college admission and life success

Research has shown that Emotional Intelligence and soft skills are actually two twice more predictive of a person's long-term success than IQ. Yet, most schools focus predominately on IQ. A number of large studies conducted by Adobe, LinkedIn, and McKinsey have all unanimously suggested the importance of soft skills such as creativity, collaboration, communication, creative problem solving, and critical thinking. In a most recent Adobe study, they revealed that scores and Grade Point Average (GPA) are actually NOT as important as what students think when it comes to college admission. Similarly, a Harvard study demonstrated that 85% of a person's career success comes from SOFT SKILLS, whereas only 15% comes from hard skills. In fact, nowadays, soft skills are being rephrased as "durable skills", whereas "hard skills" are being called "perishable skills". Unfortunately, most of our kids are learning PERISHABLE SKILLS while they are at school. 

Reason Five: Experience weighs a lot more than degrees when it comes to hiring and finding fulfilling jobs

Google said in an interview that "test scores are useless" when it comes to hiring people to work at Google. In fact, Google recently launched their own career certificates to replace the traditional four-year college for relevant roles including Data Analyst, Project Management, and User Experience Design. In fact, Google is NOT the only company that is eliminating the college degree requirement. 20+ companies have joined Google. They no longer require a college degree to be hired by these companies, such as IBA, Apple, Starbucks, Hilton, etc. The trend is clear. Your child's degree is NOT going to help them become successful in life. They need a lot more than that piece of paper. That's why learning OUTSIDE the classroom nowadays is as important, if not more than, learning INSIDE the walls.
